Headaches, Migraines and Grinding
|Headaches, Migraines and Grinding
Most people grind and clench their teeth whilst asleep or concentrating. This is known as bruxing, for many this does not cause a problem but for some it can lead to worn, unsightly, broken and sensitive teeth. Even worse, teeth can crack leading to root canal work or extractions. A night guard which is similar to a mouth guard but is thinner can be fitted to protect the teeth.
For some people bruxing triggers headaches and migraines and they have to take medication with side effects.
Headaches and migraines can often be prevented by fitting a small appliance to the front teeth. This is called an NTI or SCI (Sleep Clenching Inhibition) device. This is different to a night guard which although it protects the teeth, in some people it encourages clenching. There are no side effects with a NTI as would be the case if medication were taken.
